How to run Spore on Linux

Spore on Linux

Spore on Linux

Before we install, we need to be sure your system can really handle this kind of graphics.  You should have a decent graphics card, and you should have the drivers installed.  If not, check out this post.

The first step to installing Spore on linux is to download Wine.  Obviously Spore is not a windows program so you’re going to have to emulate windows which is what wine does.  If you’re on Ubuntu just go to the terminal and type in the following commands in this order:

sudo apt-get install wine alsa-oss

On other operating systems you can do likewise using your various package managers.

Then, after Wine is done installing, then you can pop your Spore CD into your CD drive and then it should install (if you’ve already installed spore on the same computer but in windows and you’re in a dual boot, at this point you can just browse to the folder where you already installed it in windows and run SporeApp.exe since wine is installed with all the other required packages).

After installing, get the no-cd crack from gamecopyworld here, install that into the program folder, and you’re all set!

But beware! Spore comes with a stupid protection thing that only lets you install 3 times. After the third time you cant install/use that activation key anymore.

This is a real pain for anyone who constantly has to re-format, or if they have multiple computers they want it on.

You are basically paying $50 to rent the game (3 installs.)

So if you install it on Linux, just make sure you want it on Linux.
    You only get 3 shots!

That should fix the problem you have.

Craig is talking about the activation key expiring after 3 times. 3 installs and you’re done.
Thebigguyconnor is talking about a crack to be able to run without the CD.

The two have nothing to do with each other I think.
When you install, you use the CD, and activation key.
After that, if you want to play without the CD, the crack will let you do that.
No word that the crack gets around activation…

I wish people communicate a little better.

To be honest, considering I know nothing about stuff like this I thought it was simple and understandable. Sorry for being dumb like that…… I guess.?

Nothing like a comment saying to “talk smarter” from a person who can’t differentiate between “your” and “you’re,” can’t use commas, uses nonsensical words, and uses atrocious syntax.

Perhaps you need to learn basic communication skills, your typing is atrocious.

Spore is obviously not a windows program, so we obviously don’t need wine, because we are using linux.

  • Pcik

Wine is actually not an emulator (hence the name: Wine Is Not an Emulator)
Wine is a compatibility layer making windows programs work in linux.

As others have pointed out, I think that there sneaked in a “not” where it wasn’t supposed to be, since obviously Spore IS a windows program. :)
