Introducing Sandboxie: a complete testbed solution

April 18th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | 5 Comments | Filed in Apps, Offline, Tech
Sandboxie Screenshot

Sandboxie Control

Sandboxie is an all-in one solution to trying out stuff on your computer that you don’t trust at all.  It is a brilliant idea, because it basically acts as a middleman between your PC and any programs and applications that are running on it, and it runs them inside a restricted environment, while still allowing regular interaction with the operating system.

This is a definite alternative to the virtual machine I have been using for years, and I’ll probably switch over due to the speed of not having to emulate a whole computer.

A brilliant idea overall!

Hotmail unleases POP3 email access

April 4th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | 6 Comments | Filed in How Tos, Online, Tech

Great news Hotmail users, POP3 email access using programs such as Mozilla Thunderbird and Outlook is now available to Hotmail users in:

United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. If you don’t see your country or region in this list, never fear, we’ll be rolling POP3 out to more parts of the world later this year.

Quote: Windows Live Wire Blog

Here is the POP info for if you live in one of the above countries and you’d like to try it out (Microsoft reports that POP will soon also be available in the United States):

  • POP server: pop3.live.com
  • POP SSL required? Yes
  • User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
  • Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
  • SMTP server: smtp.live.com
  • Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
  • TLS/SSL required? Yes.

Enjoy!

Instant Boss: The Perfect Work and Break Alarm

March 25th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | 4 Comments | Filed in Apps, Offline, Tech

Instant Boss, my new favorite app for the time being, is great for procrastinators and the easily distracted (myself, in other words).

It is the perfect solution to people who get distracted and are constantly thinking about something other than their work – thus creating the perfect solution – work for ten minutes, then a window pops up and says Take a Break.

Watch out now – the boss is coming ;)

This is good because it gives you a visual notification that pops up and reminds you.  One feature could be a firewall that blocks all except work sites until the break ;) .

Other than that, this is a great neat little too that is good for when you are doing work sessions – at work, or at home!

Kernel Panic when mounting DMGs in OSX86

February 27th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | 8 Comments | Filed in How Tos, Offline, Tech

The way to fix this is if you have 10.5.6, then download the seatbelt.kext from the 10.5.5 release then this will probably fix it!

I experienced this problem with iDeneb 1.4, and this easily fixed the problem.

Thanks to Pere from uphuck.ggrn.de forums for link to solution!

Let Me Google That For You

February 19th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | No Comments | Filed in Online, Tech

Found a neat site that can really help you if you want to make a point to somebody who didn’t bother googling their questions!  As the site says, it is the site for all those people that find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than google it for themselves.

Cracked LegitLibM.dll for Windows Media Player 11

February 3rd, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | 58 Comments | Filed in How Tos, Offline, Online, Tech

Still having trouble downloading Windows Media Player??  Here’s how to download and install it easily.

Download Windows Media Player 11 here without any WGA validation requests.

After doing that, you have your Windows Media Player Installer.  Install a program like WinRAR and then right click on the WMP installer and click on ‘Extract To’.

more

Now open the new wmp11 folder that appears, not the original .exe.

The folder will look like this (the important files are circled):

more2

You need to replace LegitLibM.dll with the cracked one.  Download the cracked LegitLibM.dll and then drag it into the directory.  Windows will ask you if you really want to replace the file – replace it.

Click yes to replace it, and then go into the folder and launch setup_wm.exe as you saw in the above folder picture.

Enjoy Windows Media Player 11!

How to clean your HTML code

January 28th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | 3 Comments | Filed in How Tos, Online, Tech

You might understand what I mean if I said I had code envy. All the code in all the computer books is usually nicely formatted, and spaced out perfectly. Perhaps your code is in a mess!

No matter what, your page will be easier to edit if you have nicely spaced code, so cleaning up your code is a good idea, and it’s worth it anyways even just for the benefit of your code being nice to look at.

There are a few ways to clean up your code – some HTML editors offer HTML cleanup built-in, like Adobe Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver even has a feature to clean up your messy word html – check out this article Dreamweaver and Word HTML.

Here are a few good websites that will help you clean up your code – just paste, hit enter, and go:

fixmyhtml.com

yook.de/webmaster/clean

Also, using HTML code editors with syntax highlighting when editing HTML can help keep your HTML clean.

Try these good source code editors:

Notepad++

Jext

How to fix the Calibration on the Digitizer of Palms

January 14th, 2009 by Connor McBrine-Ellis | No Comments | Filed in How Tos, Offline, Tech

PowerDiGi

As you’ve had your Palm for a while, you may find that you start having problems with your touchscreen. A few other things may break down too, like the power button, but that’s a different problem.

On your Palm, there is an LCD and a Digitizer. The digitizer is on top of the LCD and it senses pressure on the screen from your taps. The digitizer can break and visually you may not notice much.

My digitizer on my Palm seems to be breaking – as many times as I went to the calibration section of the “Prefs” app, whenever I used the touch screen, the point that showed on the LCD was WAY off calibration. I’m still not sure why this happens, but still, the way to fix it is to get a program called PowerDigi. You can download a trial here.

If you have Preference Remover and remove preference ID #49529 then your 14-day trial will not expire.
